Let’s be honest, the UK isn’t known for it’s food. We expected pub food, Scottish breakfasts & baked potatoes on our recent 3-week stay in Scotland. And for the most part, that’s what we got. Our week on the Isle of Skye, however, was such an exciting surprise of some of the best food we’ve ever had.
We were traveling with our 4 kids (ages 8-12) and they all loved these restaurants / bakeries as well. If you have young kids, you know what a win that is! Read on for our take on the best food for families on the Isle of Skye.
Favorite Eats on Skye:
Café Cùil – Easily our favorite food we had all trip. So much so that we went twice. The crab scrambled egg chili crisp summer dish was absolutely incredible. The tattie hash, scotch pancakes, kids hot chocolate (with a bear on top!), and all kids meals were so good. But OMG the banana bread. Don’t say a word about me raving about banana bread until you’ve had theirs. The second time we went I made the kids get their own. They also have the most adorable gift shop that included a tote that fits our youngest child inside. Don’t miss this stop!
Summer Cafe – I will dream about this sandwich (pictured above) for the rest of my life. So. Good. Our kids all loved the caprese sandwich, but what’s not to love with that focaccia?! Their latte, cappuccino & chocolate chip cookie were also amazing. Per usual, super friendly staff, clean bathrooms, and more room inside the cafe for seating than it appears from the outside, so don’t hesitate to go in and sit & enjoy!
The Hungry Gull – I had heard not to miss the Gull Burger and holy moly am I glad we didn’t. It was delicious. Easily the best burger we had on our trip. The kids had the kids gull burgers & chicken burgers and they loved them, too. One of us also got the spicy chicken bag and ohhhhh my goodness. 10/10 recommend. For dessert the hot cookie dough is everything you think it will be. We may need to attempt to recreate this at home…
Gasta Pizza – We went to the one in Broadford and easily got the coziest booth to enjoy a pizza lunch on a rainy day. The pizza was delicious, the service was wonderful, and we could’ve stayed all afternoon thanks to the hygge atmosphere.
The Sprig – A fancier spot that also welcomes people in sweats / athletic wear (ask me how I know…). Our kids loved the kids penne pasta and the fact that it came with gelato for dessert! Delicious cocktails (my first & only margarita of the trip), maybe the best sticky toffee pudding, and incredibly fresh, seasonal entrees.
Favorite Coffee on Skye:
Lean To Coffee – Easily the best coffee & pastries we had on Skye. We went multiple times and I’d go again right now if I could. The kids fought over the almond croissant and cruffins, but I loved the vanilla bun. Also their cheese toasties were the best we’ve ever had. As in we’re still talking about them and missing them. And this is a judgyyyyyy cheese toastie crew.
Waystone Books – I know, I know, it’s a bookstore. It will also be on that list, but the coffee was a delight. If you’re looking for takeaway coffee, highly recommend browsing books and supporting this adorable shop!
Bog Myrtle Cafe – Near Waystone Books, but if you want more of a sit-down cafe, Bog Myrtle is great! The cinny buns (using this phrasing forever) & cardamom buns were delicious and the homemade vanilla syrup in a latte was a delight!
We also enjoyed Birch coffee in Portree & Coffee Bothy in Broadford. Skye seriously has the best coffee scene in all of Scotland.
