Raven Rock State Park Day Trip Tips

Raven Rock State Park is located a short 1.5 hour drive from Raleigh, making it the perfect day trip stop for getting out and enjoying that beautiful North Carolina spring. These Raven Rock State Park day trip tips will help you make the most of exploring this lovely little state park.

The Raven Rock in Raven Rock State Park

It’s spring, guys! Well, at least for some of us. If you live in a colder weather climate like me, you’re still waiting for those first glorious spring days. But, if you call NC or somewhere close to it home, spring is already on your doorstep. These early spring months are a great time of year to get out into nature before the temperatures climb to their summer heights.

Located in Lillington, NC, Raven Rock makes for a great Saturday day trip, or a a great add to the spring break week when kids are out of school.

1. Take a picnic

There are great facilities (tables under shelter and restrooms) located right off the main parking lot, making picnicking at the park a breeze. Stop to fuel up the kids before heading off on the trails, or wrap up a morning out with a lunch break. It’s also an easy area for kids to explore or play in before heading home for the day. If you’re short on supplies, downtown Lillington has several restaurant and grocery options.

2. Hike the Raven Rock Loop Trail

It’s probably your most likely stop, but just in case you were in doubt. This is the trail that will lead you down to the Raven Rock, a massive crystalline rock structure sitting on the banks of the Cape Fear River. The trail, about 3 miles long, is easy and perfect for younger children, winding through woods and small creeks. There are built-in stairs to access the river bank. The rock creates a huge bluff overlooking the river – it’s unique and worth the walk.

3. Add on the Fish Traps Trail

This little extra mile of hiking will take you to a completely different section of the river featuring boulders stretching out into the river. We missed it the first few trips to the park, but now that we’ve done it, it’s a must visit for the kids every time we go.

4. Take time to play in the creeks and rivers

None of the trails in the park are super long, so plan time to explore the creeks and the Cape Fear River. My kids especially love exploring out onto the rocks of the Fish Traps. Unless the water is super high or strong, they can easily clamber over the rocks. Of course, take good care near the water, especially with younger children.

5. Make a pit stop in Fuquay-Varina for good food and drinks

Fuquay-Varina has two lively downtowns side by side, Downtown Fuquay Springs and Downtown Varina. There are a wealth of cool options in both – it’s really small town North Carolina vibes at its finest. We love Vicious Fishes for food, Aviator Brewing Co for drinks and Cultivate Coffee Roasters for coffee. Stop at Stick Boy Bread Co for baked goods or Pints Ice Cream & Beer for, well, ice cream and beer.
